West Vancouver Child Counselling

Help for Kids Who Are Struggling
Your kid used to be happy. Now they're having meltdowns over nothing, fake sick to avoid school, or spending all their time alone in their room. Teachers are calling about behavior or grades dropping. Friends aren't coming around anymore. You've tried talking, consequences, rewards - nothing's working and you don't know what's wrong or how to fix it. West Vancouver child counselling helps kids work through whatever's bothering them - anxiety, trauma, family changes, bullying, grief - so they can be kids again instead of struggling every day.

Creekside Counselling works with families throughout West Vancouver from Horseshoe Bay to Gleneagles who are watching their child suffer and feeling helpless. Whether your kid is 5 or 12, dealing with divorce or nightmares, acting out or shutting down - child counselling gives them tools to feel better and helps you understand what's really going on.
Benefits of Child Counselling
-
Kids don't process things the same way adults do. They can't always sit down and talk about their feelings in neat sentences. Child counselling uses age-appropriate approaches - play therapy for younger kids, talk therapy for older ones, EMDR for trauma - that meet children where they are developmentally.
 -
The earlier you address problems, the better. Anxiety that seems minor in grade 2 can become debilitating by middle school if left alone. Trauma from a car accident or family violence gets worse over time, not better. Child counselling helps kids process difficult experiences before they become deeper mental health issues.
 -
We help kids with the specific struggles they face. Separation anxiety that makes drop-off at school a nightmare every morning. Social anxiety where they can't handle birthday parties or group projects. Fears and phobias about things like dogs, the dark, or throwing up. Anger that explodes over tiny frustrations. Sadness they can't shake after losing a grandparent or beloved pet.
 -
For kids who've experienced trauma - abuse, witnessing violence, scary accidents, medical procedures - child counselling provides specialized trauma therapy that helps their nervous system calm down. Traumatized kids are often stuck in fight-or-flight mode, which shows up as behavior problems, nightmares, regression, or physical complaints like stomachaches.
 -
Child counselling also helps with the behavioral stuff that's driving you crazy but is actually a symptom of something deeper. The kid who can't sit still and gets in trouble constantly might be dealing with anxiety. The perfectionist who melts down over one wrong answer might be terrified of disappointing you. The kid who lies about everything might not feel safe telling the truth. We figure out what's underneath the behavior and address that.
 -
Parents get support too. We teach you how to respond to your child's struggles in ways that actually help instead of accidentally making things worse. You'll understand what triggers your kid, how to create safety at home, and how to support their healing between sessions.
Creekside Counselling's Approach to Child Counselling
First session is usually just me and the parents. We talk about what you're seeing at home and school, when it started, what you've already tried, family history, and what you're most worried about. This gives me context before meeting your child.

When I do meet your kid, I make it comfortable and non-threatening. Younger children don't "do therapy" the way adults do - we play, draw, use toys, read books. That IS the therapy. Through play, kids show me what they can't say in words. Play therapy helps children process trauma, express difficult emotions, work through family changes, and develop coping skills without having to articulate complex feelings.

For school-age kids (roughly 7-12), we mix talk and play depending on their maturity. Some 8-year-olds can talk about their feelings pretty directly, others need more hands-on activities. I follow their lead and use what works for that specific child.

When kids have experienced trauma - abuse, accidents, witnessing violence, scary medical procedures - we often use EMDR therapy adapted for children. Kids can't always verbalize traumatic memories the way adults can, so we might use drawing, toys, or storytelling alongside bilateral stimulation to help their brain process what happened. EMDR works really well for childhood trauma, nightmares, and phobias.

We also teach kids concrete coping skills they can actually use. Breathing exercises for anxiety (kid-friendly versions, not boring adult meditation). Ways to calm their body down when they're overwhelmed. How to recognize and name their feelings. Tools for handling friendship drama or school stress.

I keep parents involved throughout. After each session, I give you a quick update on what we worked on and any strategies to practice at home. Every few weeks we do a parent check-in session to review progress and adjust our approach. Child counselling works best when parents and therapist are on the same team.

Confidentiality with kids is tricky. I explain to children that what we talk about is private UNLESS someone is hurting them or they're thinking about hurting themselves or someone else. Parents don't get a play-by-play of everything their kid says, but you do get the information you need to support them at home.
Pricing Information
Child counselling sessions are $165 per 50-minute session. For younger kids with short attention spans, we sometimes do 30-40 minute sessions more frequently rather than forcing a full 50 minutes.

Most kids start with weekly sessions. As they improve, we space out to biweekly or monthly check-ins before ending therapy. Total length depends on what we're treating - general anxiety might take 8-12 sessions, complex trauma could take 6 months to a year.
We provide detailed receipts for insurance. Most extended health plans in BC cover child counselling under mental health benefits. Check your plan - lots of West Vancouver employers offer good coverage that families don't realize they have.

Some situations qualify for additional funding - MCFD support for kids in care, autism funding for children on the spectrum, ICBC coverage for accident-related trauma, or Crime Victim Assistance for abuse cases. We can help navigate those systems if relevant.
Areas We Serve
We're located in West Vancouver and work with families throughout the North Shore. Our child counselling clients come from all West Van neighborhoods - Horseshoe Bay, Dundarave, Ambleside, Caulfeild, British Properties, Eagle Harbour, Whitby Estates, Cypress Village, Gleneagles, Bayridge, Chartwell.

We also see kids from North Vancouver, Lions Bay, Bowen Island, and throughout Metro Vancouver when families want specialized child trauma therapy or can't find the right fit closer to home.

For teens who can do sessions independently, we offer virtual counselling too. Younger kids do better in-person where I can use play materials and read body language more easily, but older elementary school kids sometimes do fine online if getting to the office is hard.
Frequently Asked Questions About Child Counselling
How do I know if my child needs counselling or if this is just normal kid stuff?
Trust your gut. If you're worried enough to be reading this, there's probably something worth addressing. Normal kid stuff doesn't usually involve persistent anxiety, behavior that's getting worse instead of better, regression in development, school refusal, frequent nightmares, or signs they've experienced trauma. When in doubt, a consultation doesn't hurt.
Will therapy traumatize my child or make them think something's wrong with them?
Nope. Kids usually love coming to counselling once they realize it's a safe place to play and talk without getting in trouble. We frame it as "a place to work on big feelings" or "learn tools for tricky situations," not "you're broken and need fixing." Most kids leave sessions happy.
What if my child refuses to talk in therapy?
That's totally normal, especially at first. Kids don't have to talk for therapy to work - we use play, art, sand tray, games, movement. Through these activities, kids process and communicate without having to verbalize everything. Some kids warm up slowly, and that's fine. We go at their pace.
How long does child counselling take?
Depends what we're treating. Specific fears or phobias might resolve in 6-10 sessions. General anxiety or adjustment to divorce might take 3-6 months. Complex trauma from abuse could take a year or more. Every kid's different. We'll give you a better sense of timeline after the first few sessions.
Do you tell parents everything the child says?
No, kids need some privacy to open up. I share themes and progress, teach you strategies to use at home, and tell you about anything safety-related (abuse, suicidal thoughts, plans to harm someone). But I don't report every detail of what your kid talks about. That said, younger children have less confidentiality than teens.
What's the difference between child counselling and play therapy?
Play therapy is a type of child counselling. With younger kids (roughly 3-9), play IS the therapy - it's how they process and communicate. Older kids might do more talking mixed with some activities. Both fall under child counselling, we just adjust the approach to the child's age and needs.
Can you help with behavior problems or is this just for emotions?
We address both. Behavior problems usually stem from underlying emotions or trauma. The kid who's aggressive often feels scared or powerless. The one who lies might not feel safe with honesty. We work on the emotions and thoughts driving the behavior, which then improves the behavior itself.
What if only one parent thinks our child needs therapy?
This happens a lot. One parent sees the struggles, the other thinks the kid will "grow out of it" or that therapy is overreacting. Come in for a consultation together and let's talk about what you're both seeing. Often once we explain what's going on developmentally or what untreated anxiety can lead to, the hesitant parent gets on board.
Your kid doesn't have to struggle alone. West Vancouver child counselling helps children work through whatever's bothering them so they can enjoy being a kid again. Book your consultation today and let's figure out how to help your child feel better.
